Understanding Your Emotions

When we understand what we feel, it becomes easier to heal. Emotions are part of being human. But when you’ve gone through pain or trauma, your feelings can become confusing, heavy, or overwhelming. This section is here to help you recognize, name, and begin to understand your emotions—without judgment.

Find Your Calm: A Simple Grounding Exercise

When your thoughts feel overwhelming, try this grounding technique to bring your attention back to the present moment.
Hello, friend. When your mind feels busy or worried, try this simple exercise with me.
First, take a deep breath in through your nose… and slowly breathe out through your mouth.
Now, look around and find 5 things you can see. Say them out loud or quietly to yourself.
Next, find 4 things you can touch around you — maybe your shirt, the chair, or your hands.
Now listen carefully and notice 3 things you can hear right now — birds, wind, voices.
Then, find 2 things you can smell — maybe fresh air or something nearby.
Finally, notice 1 thing you can taste — even if it’s just the air in your mouth.
Take another deep breath. You are here. You are safe.
When you feel ready, open your eyes and carry this calm with you.
